I never thought Fiona would lose her job. “Surely, they won’t fire you. You are my sister. Of course you did whatever it took to save my life, and you didn’t even do anything.”

“Which is why the only thing that will happen to me is losing my job. I knew the moment I told Jarrett to do whatever it took what I was risking. And he knew what he was risking by doing it. The thing is, he might be prepared, and even willing, to lose his life, but there is no damned reason he should.” Her voice turned hard and cold. I could see barely suppressed fury rising up behind her eyes.

“Lose his life? They can’t kill him.” I sat up straighter, my voice becoming shrill as panic gurgled up inside me. I was angry with Jarrett. I even hated him a little for making me love him and not returning the feeling. But I didn’t want him to die. I might have wished he’d let me bleed out instead of dooming me to a life of loneliness and loss, but I knew deep inside, he’d done what he’d felt was right. And in the same position, I may have done the same thing, no matter who the injured person had been. He didn’t deserve to be punished for that. And most certainly not executed.

“Yes, they can,” Fiona said, spearing me with an icy stare. “Look, I know you are going through something, and I promised—we all promised—Luca not to upset you, but I don’t have the luxury of being soft right now. Later, you can sit in the dark and sulk or cry and rage at me all you want. But Jarrett is about to walk into that tribunal and face the death sentence. If you aren’t there to testify, he won’t have a chance.”

“I don’t…” I stopped because I had no idea what I was going to say. That I didn’t want to go, that I didn’t know if I could face him after yesterday, that I didn’t want him to be executed? All of those things were equally true.

As if reading my mind, Fiona said, “I don’t care what went down in here yesterday. I don’t care what is happening between the two of you. Jarrett Campbell saved your life, and you need to get your ass up and out of that bed and do whatever you can to save his. I’ll send the nurse in to help you dress. You have half an hour.”

The door slammed behind her.
